Break a Bone

Ha Giang - Northern Vietnam on the Vietnamese border.

It was early afternoon and I was paying attention to every part of the road. I wasn’t going fast. It was some nice gentle downhill S bends.

I was taking a gentle turn left and the first thing I knew was my helmet hit the ground. My left shoulder also hit the ground and I slid a short distance. Thank goodness I was insisting on wearing my jacket.

I did a system check and coming out of the shock I started to celebrate that I survived whatever it was that just happened Period but when I went to move an enormous lightning bolt of pain from my left ankle let me know I did not escape without injury.

Then began the long journey back to health! I spent half an hour on the side of the road laying there waiting for my guide to find Help. Eventually he came back and got me on a pass by scooter and for 40 minutes in agonising pain with blood dripping from my ankle we went to some archaic medical place.

Most importantly at this point she hit me with morphine in the indescribable pain I was in for the last hour and a half was subdued.

From there they splint my leg and put me in an ambulance to Cat Ba hospital where they x-rayed and put a plaster on it and I stayed overnight. Over the next couple of days somehow I managed to get hold of some super strong painkillers and got on a plane back to Sydney and made it to RPA hospital where I spent a month with several operations plate plates and screws put in my ankle.

55 years old and my first bone break,, tick.
